Metal Photo Prints vs Canvas Prints

Compare image character, surface, glare, framing, cleaning, weight and room placement before choosing a metal or canvas print.

01

Surface and image character

A coated aluminum print has a smooth, defined surface that can emphasize fine detail and clean edges. Canvas introduces a woven texture that can soften fine detail and create a traditional art-print character.

02

Reflection and lighting

Gloss metal can look vivid but may reflect windows and lamps. Matte metal controls glare. Canvas is generally less mirror-like, although protective coatings and lighting still affect it.

Walk through the room at different times of day before choosing a finish.

Edges and presentation

Metal panels can be displayed with a floating rear mount, standoffs, a frame or a tabletop support. Canvas is commonly stretched around a wood frame and may be displayed without an additional outer frame.

04

Cleaning and handling

Metal surfaces are smooth and can often be wiped carefully according to the product provider’s instructions. Canvas texture can trap dust and should be cleaned gently without pushing dirt into the weave.

Neither format should be treated as indestructible. Protect corners, avoid abrasive cleaners and follow the maker’s guidance.

Which should you choose?

Choose metal when you want a slim modern profile, crisp photographic presentation or a metallic visual effect. Choose canvas when textile texture and a softer traditional presentation suit the image and room.

For a large order or an important exhibition, compare the same image on small samples before committing.
